What are the best practices for implementing videoconferencing into K-12 classrooms?  Teachers provide the environment for learning that can be enhanced through the use of online connections to outside resources.  The teaching strategies to implement videoconferencing can enhance the experience for all.  The teacher who embraces the technology and modifies teaching strategies will have success with implementation.

Important components to implementation include:

  • Planning - careful planning ensures a smooth implementation process.

  • Classroom set-up - the physical set-up in the classroom is key.

  • Teacher knowledge and comfort level with hardware and software is essential to implementation

  • Coaching students to be active participants in the videoconferencing process is an effective strategy for implementing videoconferencing in instruction.  Student who have a teacher who models, encourages, enables independence, and applauds success generally are students who are successful independent learners.

  • Students can participate as active videoconferencing learners and content product creators to fully engage in the videoconferencing session.  Students who actively participate in the technology gain expertise in the management of technology tools.  These skills transfer to other technology concepts and provide essential skills.
